Product Overview

Transformer breathers regulate moisture ingress caused by thermal expansion and contraction of transformer insulating oil. As oil temperatures fluctuate under varying electrical loads, air enters and exits the conservator tank. The breather extracts water vapor before it reaches the oil, preventing dielectric breakdown and sludge formation. Units are available in traditional clear-bowl visual configurations and maintenance-free self-dehydrating designs for remote or high-humidity installations. STEP files and dimensional CAD drawings are accessible upon request for engineering layout integration.

Product Types & Working Principle

Conventional Silica Gel Breather

Utilizes a transparent acrylic or polycarbonate cylinder containing cobalt-free indicating silica gel. Air passes through an oil seal cup that traps dust particles, then filters through the desiccant bed.

Self-Dehydrating (Electronic) Breather

Operates via automated heating elements controlled by moisture sensors. Eliminates manual desiccant replacement by driving off absorbed moisture during low-load cycles.

Working Cycle

During transformer cooling, air is drawn inward through the base oil cup, passes upward through the active desiccant matrix, and enters the conservator dry. During heating, dry air is expelled outward, partially regenerating surface moisture on the lower desiccant layer.

Manufacturing & Quality Control

CNC Machining

Flange sealing faces are CNC-milled to maintain a flatness tolerance within 0.05 mm, preventing atmospheric bypass leaks.

Pressure Testing

Every assembled housing undergoes a 0.03 MPa pneumatic pressure decay test submerged in a water bath for 60 seconds.

Surface Treatment

Aluminum components receive a chromate conversion coating followed by an 80 micrometers (um) electrostatic polyester powder coat, passing 1,000-hour salt spray testing.

Material Traceability

Raw material mill test certificates provided for stainless steel flanges and pressure-retaining components.

Customization Options

Flange Adaptors

Custom bolt-hole pitch circles and threaded spigots engineered to match legacy transformer retrofits.

Corrosion Protection

Upgraded 316L stainless steel hardware and marine-grade epoxy paint systems for coastal and offshore platforms.

Electrical Integration

Potential-free dry contacts integrated into electronic breathers for remote control system alarm generation upon desiccant saturation.

FAQ

Q: What is the standard service life of the silica gel inside the breather?

A: Service life depends directly on local ambient humidity, transformer load cycling frequency, and the physical capacity of the desiccant charge. In high-humidity coastal zones, visual inspection is required every 30 to 60 days. When active silica gel transitions from orange to green or colorless, manual replacement or regeneration is required.

Q: How do I select the correct breather size for a specific transformer?

A: Selection relies on two primary variables: the total mass of insulating oil within the transformer tank and the maximum daily breathing volume. As a baseline rule, allow 0.5 kg of silica gel for every 1,000 liters of transformer oil, adjusting upward for units operating in severe ambient moisture conditions.

Q: Are the silica gel crystals cobalt-chloride free?

A: Yes. Standard supply utilizes non-toxic, cobalt-free orange silica gel indicators compliant with chemical safety regulations. Formulations transition upon moisture saturation without releasing heavy metal compounds.

Q: Can these breathers be retrofitted to older transformers with non-standard flange sizes?

A: Yes. Engineering teams produce custom adapter plates and transition spigots matching legacy bolt patterns to allow direct drop-in replacement without field welding or pipe modification.

Q: What maintenance is required for the bottom oil seal cup?

A: The oil cup must be inspected quarterly to check oil levels and clear accumulated sludge or dust sediment. Refill only with clean, dry transformer insulating oil matching the grade specified on the main transformer nameplate. Do not overfill past the internal baffle line.

Q: What documentation is provided for utility grid compliance?

A: Units are manufactured in facilities operating under established quality management systems. Material compliance packages include standard restriction of hazardous substances declarations, chemical regulation compliance statements, and pressure test certificates traceable by individual serial number.
